Overcoming Fears

How Fears Originate

Most people have some form of irrational fear that originated in childhood.  Most of these fears occur from a frightful experience as a child where the child reacted in fear and created a permanent memory that the experience, animal or situation is fearful.

This fear is not usually based on a realistic fear, although it seems that way.  People that are afraid of spiders, mice, snakes or high places or flying in airplanes are usually extremely fearful and avoid the situation at all costs.

Most of these fears are based in the subconscious where the brain assumes these fears are based in reality.  The person truly believes that they could come to harm if exposed to these situations, and act accordingly in the real world.

The Impact of Fears

Fears or phobias can have a dramatic effect on people’s lives and often times take control, rather than the person being in control.  Do your fears do affect you in any of the following ways?

  • Immobilize decision making.
  • Prevent you from overcoming your insecurity, prevent you from trusting others, and prevent you from being willing to become vulnerable in order to grow.
  • Prevent you from being willing to let go of old habits or ways of thinking in order to change.
  • Make you resistant to all offers of help from others.
  • Terrify you and make you unwilling to venture out into the world, making you a prisoner in your home.
  • Stifle your motivation to pursue an education or a career.
  • Keep you locked in self-destructive behavior.
  • Prevent you from believing in your chances to become a fully functioning, healthy individual.
  • Is your fear the reason why you find yourself stuck in old ways of acting and believing?
  • Is your fear a roadblock to change and growth?
How to Overcome the Fears

There are many different ways to overcome these fears.  Behaviour modification is a form that works slowly by creating situations that the person is placed in so that he/she becomes more comfortable over time.  Therapy, regression and other methods work and can be effective.  They are more costly options that require a qualified third party to support the process.

The first step in overcoming fears is changing your beliefs about the fears and shifting the negative self-talk to positive affirmations.  Some negative beliefs are:

Ø No matter what I do, I'll never be able to overcome that fear.

Ø Things are always going to be this way, so there is no use in trying.

Ø  I'll never change. It is just a waste of time to try.

Ø Everyone in my family had the same fears. Why should I be different?

Ø I'm so scared of these things. It is impossible to feel differently.

Ø There are so many reasons why I should feel the way I do. It is useless to believe I could feel differently.

Ø I am a useless specimen who deserves no better than this.

Ø These fears are a part of me. I've felt this way forever. It is too much work and too difficult to let go of them.

Ø I have no idea what it is I'm afraid of. I only know I feel fear, anxiety, and tension.

Ø It takes too much work to overcome all of these fears, so just forget it.

Ø Most of the methods used to relax fear are silly and childish. They can't possibly work.

Ø I've never been able to get rid of these fears, and I can't do it now.

Ø It is impossible for me to picture anything in my mind. The visualization techniques are useless for me.

Ø No one can help me with this.

Ø Why try? I'll only end up regretting the waste of time and energy in the end.

Ø If fear is a fact of life I need to accept, why do I need to learn to overcome it? Wouldn't it be better to just accept it and go on?

Ø It is impossible not to think about these fears.

Ø I have no way of having a happy life with these fears.

Ø If a fear regains strength it is close to impossible to get rid of it a second time.

Ø Fear is an unacceptable feeling or behaviour; anyone who has fear must be crazy.
