Fear of Change
What is Fear of Change
The fear of change is more common in our society than people might think. Babies and animals like routine and many adults are the same. When people are required to change or have the desire to change, it is often the case that people have to step outside of their comfort zone. This discomfort can stall the change process in its tracks.
There are a multitude of fears we may experience when making a major personal change. We can fear success as much as failure, and--in relationships--commitment as much as rejection. So often, though, the heart of the problem is simply that we don’t like change. When we look carefully at what frightens us, we find it is the fear of change that is holding us back.
Of course we find unwelcome change unsettling. But this can be just as true when the change is one we strongly desire to make. That is to say, we can long for the change on one level yet fear it on another. Such ambivalence when making a major change is extremely common, although many people are surprised when they experience it.
Fear of change is in most cases accompanied by a feeling of insecurity and a sense of loss. However, life without a change is not acceptable. A changeless life is often monotonous and unexciting.
Negative Thoughts encouraging Fear of Change
Many people don’t realize that they have negative scripts or self talk when it comes to change. These beliefs stall us from embarking on any real change.
Before any real change can happen, people need to change these negative thoughts to positive ones. Otherwise the creative subconscious self regulates to stop the change or even sabotage it.
Below are some examples of negative thoughts:
1. If I change I will encounter new situations I am not prepared for that will make feel uncomfortable, anxious, or inadequate.
2. If I change then I will be allowing myself to become exploited.
3. The fear of change helps protect my rights as an individual.
4. Change is only uncomfortable.
5. Change means I'm being passive.
6. The unknown is fraught with uncertainty and where I am now is certain and more comfortable.
7. Change requires effort and is inherently painful.
Overcome Fear of Change
There are many ways to overcome fears and specifically the fear of change. The most effective method is to internalize the belief that change is within our comfort zone.
Once we believe that change is not only inevitable but interesting, challenging and rewarding, people respond much more positively to changes in their lives.
