Claustrophobia

What is Claustrophobia?

Claustrophobia is one of the most common phobias in America. Claustrophobia is an anxiety disorder characterized by panic or irrational fear of confined or enclosed spaces. Claustrophobia is designated as a situational phobia, because it is triggered by a certain situation.

Claustrophobia can develop from either a traumatic childhood experience (such as being trapped in a small space during a childhood game), or from another unpleasant experience later on in life involving confined spaces (such as being stuck in an elevator).

A person who suffers from claustrophobia may break into a panic or find it difficult to breathe when inside a lift (elevator), a bus, an airplane, a room with lots of people or any confined space.

Claustrophobia can make one's life miserable, cause embarrassment, and undermine self confidence and self esteem.

You can overcome Claustrophobia!

Claustrophobia is a learned response to being in certain situations. A response that is powerful, uncomfortable, embarrassing, inconvenient, debilitating at times, perhaps even seriously debilitating - but still a learned response. And just as you can learn to have a particular response you can unlearn it.

Phobias are, for example, an indication of how wonderfully fast the brain learns a new behaviour. Often it just takes one 'bad' experience for the unconscious mind to generalize behaviours of being terrified of something that can last for years, sometimes a lifetime.

The good news is that because the brain does learn to be scared so quickly, it can learn a different and more useful behaviour (not to be scared) just as quickly.

What does it take to Change

In order to overcome claustrophobia, it is critical to change your thoughts and beliefs about the fear.  There are many ways to do this. The first step is a willingness to change and be open to new beliefs.

Deep-breathing, visualization and other meditation exercises can be powerful weapons against panic. Since the situation is a learned response, through positive visualization, a new learned response can be experienced.  This new response removes the fear of enclosed spaces forever.
